Soft credit search

A soft credit search is a check on your credit file that is not visible to other lenders and does not affect your credit score.

Also known as: soft search, soft credit check, eligibility checker

Soft searches are used when you check your own report, when a lender pre-approves you or when you use an eligibility checker on a comparison site. They give an indication of whether you are likely to be accepted without leaving a mark.

Only a formal application leaves a hard search. Always use a soft search first if one is offered.

You can check your credit reports for free, and you should never need to pay for a credit score or report.

Your situation is unique — please check official sources such as GOV.UK and MoneyHelper, and speak to a qualified, FCA-authorised adviser before making important decisions about your money.
