Buildings insurance
Buildings insurance covers the structure of your home, such as walls, roof, floors and fixtures, against events like fire, flood and storms.
Also known as: buildings cover
Mortgage lenders normally require it. The sum insured should reflect the cost of rebuilding your home, not its market value. In leasehold flats, the freeholder often arranges cover, so check what is included.
Read the exclusions, such as wear and tear and unoccupied property limits, and answer questions honestly when you buy.
Check the policy documents and the key facts before you buy, and compare the cover as well as the price.
