Shared ownership
Shared ownership is a scheme that lets you buy a share of a home, usually between 10% and 75%, and pay rent on the rest to a housing association.
It lowers the deposit and mortgage you need, and you can usually buy more shares over time, which is known as staircasing. You pay rent as well as the mortgage, and may pay service charges and repair costs.
Read the lease carefully and get independent legal advice. Understand how selling works and how the rent can change.
An authorised mortgage adviser can explain how this applies to your circumstances, and MoneyHelper offers free guidance. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.
