Council tax arrears
Council tax arrears are unpaid council tax bills, which are a priority debt because councils have strong powers to collect them.
Also known as: council tax debt
If you miss a payment, the council can send a reminder, withdraw your right to pay by instalments and ask a magistrates court for a liability order. A liability order lets the council use bailiffs, take money from your wages or benefits, or apply for a charging order.
Contact the council early, check you are getting any discounts or Council Tax Reduction, and get free advice. Councils can often agree an affordable repayment plan.
