How credit card repayments work
Credit card interest is charged on what you still owe, so the more slowly you repay, the more interest builds up. A small increase in your monthly payment can shorten the repayment time by a surprising amount.
This calculator shows the effect of different payments side by side. It works for one card; if you have several debts, the Debt Repayment Calculator compares the avalanche and snowball methods.
If you are struggling to keep up
If the payment you need is more than you can afford, you are not alone and free, impartial help is available. Contact your provider early and speak to a free debt adviser such as MoneyHelper, StepChange, Citizens Advice or National Debtline.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your current card balance and the APR shown on your statement.
- Choose "I know my monthly payment" and enter what you plan to pay, or choose "I want to be clear in" and enter a number of months.
- Read the results: time to clear, total interest, and total repaid. Try a higher payment to see the difference.
How it is calculated
Each month, interest is added at the APR divided by 12 and your payment is then taken off. This repeats until the balance reaches zero.
For the "clear in" option, the payment is the level amount that brings the balance to exactly zero after the number of months you choose.
Worked example
A balance of £3,000 at 22.9% APR, paid at £100 a month, takes 45 months and costs £1,495.50 in interest. Paying £157 a month instead clears it in 24 months and cuts the interest to £767.13.
Assumptions and limits
- The APR stays the same and you make no new purchases or cash withdrawals.
- Interest is calculated monthly. Your provider may calculate it daily, so real figures can differ slightly.
- Fees, promotional rates and missed-payment charges are not included.
Common questions
Where do I find my card’s APR?
It is printed on your monthly statement and in your online account, usually labelled "purchase APR" or "interest rate". Use the rate for the balance you are repaying.
Why does the calculator say my balance will never clear?
If your monthly payment is no bigger than a month’s interest, the balance never falls. Increase the payment above the interest charged, or ask your provider about your options.
Does this include new spending?
No. It assumes you stop adding to the card. New purchases would extend the repayment time.
Is the result exact?
It is an estimate. Providers calculate interest in slightly different ways, so check your statement for your own figures.
